Kennedy Center, September 7, 2011. On a lark, I hit the red button and let my recorder run inside my bag. J. played acoustic through a giant fender amp that was tilted back towards him, away from the audience. Two Asian women in their fifties sat next to me. They slept through most of the set, guitar solos and all. They both wore red tops with cropped black jackets, but not identical ones.

The Plums at Bella Cafe, August 23, 2011. The band offered earplugs to the audience before the show, passing around the plastic jar full of orange foam pellets like other bands would pass around a hat for gas money.
